How to calculate a tip and split the bill

The arithmetic is simple; the important part is checking local customs, service charges, and what the group has agreed to split.

The basic calculation

Multiply the bill amount by the chosen tip percentage. For a $64 bill and an 18% tip, calculate 64 × 0.18 = $11.52. Add that to the bill for a total of $75.52.

Formula: tip = bill × tip rate. Total = bill + tip.

Check the receipt before adding a tip

Some restaurants add a service charge or gratuity automatically, particularly for larger groups. Read the receipt and ask staff if the wording is unclear. A service charge may or may not be distributed like a voluntary tip, and practices differ between countries and businesses.

Choose the amount the percentage applies to

People do not always use the same base. Some calculate a tip on the pre-tax food and drink total; others use the final amount after tax. If the difference matters, agree on the approach before splitting.

Three ways to split

  1. Equal split: divide the final total by the number of people. This is quick when orders are similar.
  2. Itemized split: each person pays for their own items, plus an allocated share of tax, service, and tip.
  3. Weighted split: divide shared dishes equally but assign individual drinks or expensive items to the person who ordered them.

Traveling outside your home country

Tipping customs vary substantially. In some places, service is commonly built into menu prices or added to the bill. In others, a voluntary tip forms a more important part of restaurant compensation. Check a current, reliable local travel source rather than assuming your home-country percentage applies everywhere.
