8-Week Moving Checklist

8 weeks before

  • Research and get quotes from moving companies
  • Create a moving budget
  • Start a "keep, donate, toss" sort of your belongings
  • Research your new area (schools, utilities providers, parking rules)

6 weeks before

  • Book your moving company or truck rental
  • Start collecting boxes and packing materials
  • Use up frozen and perishable food
  • Request time off work for moving day if needed

4 weeks before

  • Submit a change-of-address form
  • Notify banks, subscriptions, and insurance of your new address
  • Schedule utility disconnection at old address and connection at new address
  • Begin packing non-essential rooms

2 weeks before

  • Confirm moving company date and time
  • Arrange care for kids or pets on moving day
  • Pack most of your home, leaving out daily essentials
  • Transfer or cancel local memberships (gym, etc.)

Moving day

  • Do a final walkthrough of every room and closet
  • Take photos of utility meters at both properties
  • Keep essentials box (chargers, medication, snacks) with you, not on the truck
  • Hand over keys and confirm final address with movers
